Concrete vs Screed
The difference between concrete and screed is that concrete is used for strength whereas screed is used to finish floors as a top layer. Both materials are made from a mix of aggregates cement and water but whilst concrete is more coarse, screed has a finer consistency because it uses finer aggregate.
Screed is an essential part of any construction project and the right screed can be of crucial importance to the success of your project. We can introduce admixtures to your screed mix to alter the properties of the screed.

Types of screed available
There are different types of screed available. Our concrete and screed experts are on hand to talk you through the options and properties of each one to ensure the best finish on your job.
- Floating screed: This screed is meant to be applied over insulation to create a thermally efficient or sound-insulated floor. This is most commonly used for underfloor heating systems.
- Bonded screed: This mix is fully bonded to the substrate with a bonding agent or primer. This is used for projects where heavy loading will be common, such as car parks and driveways.
- Unbonded screed: Unbonded screeds are not bonded directly to the base and can be laid over a damp proof membrane (DPM). Unbonded screed is at least 50mm thick and the fact it is not bonded to the main structure means that settlement or shrinkage risks are less.
- Underfloor heating screed: This type of is commonly laid directly on top of heating pipes within underfloor heating systems, rather than insulation. This can help the heating system provide a more consistent output.
